Frequently Asked Questions
Does Arizona have state income tax?
Yes, but Arizona withholding doesn't work like most states. Instead of filing status and allowances, employees elect a flat withholding percentage of their gross taxable wages on Form A-4 — 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, 3%, or 3.5% — matching Arizona's flat individual income tax.
What percentage does Arizona withhold if I don't choose one?
2%. If a new employee doesn't return Form A-4 within 5 days of hire, Arizona law requires the employer to withhold at the 2% default rate. You can change your elected percentage with your employer at any time.
Can I have $0 Arizona tax withheld from my paycheck?
Yes, if you certify on Form A-4 that you expect no Arizona tax liability for the year and elect the 0% option. The calculator's State Taxes tab includes this election alongside the other percentage choices.
Do Phoenix, Tucson, or other Arizona cities add their own income tax?
No. Arizona municipalities are barred by state law from levying a local income tax, so your elected percentage is the same no matter which Arizona city you work in.
