Frequently Asked Questions
How does New York State paycheck withholding work?
New York withholds state income tax on a graduated schedule (Method II) based on the filing status and total exemptions claimed on Form IT-2104. Above roughly $1.08 million (single) or $2.16 million (married) in annualized wages, New York switches to Method III, a flat rate applied to your full annualized wages instead of marginal brackets.
Does New York City tax appear on my paycheck?
Only if you tell the calculator you're a New York City resident. NYC resident income tax is a separate tax on top of New York State withholding, calculated on its own per-period tables — select "New York City" as your local jurisdiction in the State Taxes tab to include it.
What is the Yonkers tax, and which version applies to me?
Yonkers has two different local taxes depending on your situation. Yonkers residents pay a resident surcharge equal to 16.75% of their New York State tax. People who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere instead pay a flat 0.5% nonresident earnings tax on their wages. The calculator asks you to pick the one that matches your situation, since they're calculated completely differently.
Does living in Yonkers or NYC change my New York State tax, too?
No — New York State income tax is calculated the same way regardless of locality. NYC and Yonkers taxes are added on top of the state tax, not blended into it, and the calculator shows them as separate line items.
What if I live or work somewhere in New York outside NYC and Yonkers?
Select "None" for local jurisdiction. New York State doesn't have a general local income tax outside of New York City and Yonkers, so no additional local withholding applies elsewhere in the state.
What taxes are deducted from a New York paycheck?
Federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, New York State income tax, and — only if applicable — New York City or Yonkers local tax. New York has no additional statewide employee payroll tax beyond these.
